ROLE: Senior Product Designer (2021 – present) at JUMO
I have been working on quite a few projects while at JUMO, but I’m just going to go through the MTN MoMo application design for Zambia.
I was asked to convert the loan flows from USSD to integrate into the MTN MoMo application. The JUMO loan product for MTN in Zambia is called KASAKA.
(*Before we started with this we created a web view loan application process that we used for testing in a few countries. We offered it to some of our existing USSD clients and we made sure the clients are already vetted, we also ran a check to see who are using smart phones, but we did not exclude people that does not have smart phones, we added a check & if the user did not have a smart phone to view the link on we sent them a text message asking them to please use a desktop machine or smart phone to access the link.)
Here are some of the first wireframes and flows that I designed and sent to MTN:
Working with a view parties and across a few countries sometimes becomes a bit complicated. On the above wireframes we specified who is responsible for which section – because in some places the services overlaps and it helps with planning and timelines.
After a few iterations of the flows and implementing some feedback I contacted the designer at MTN (at this time Comviva was still responsible for the UI as well of the MTN MoMo application). The designer sent me some Sketch files which I imported into Figma and then I applied the UI according to the corresponding files.
I also created a file to ask the designer for some assets I need to comply with the MTN brand.
No for the funny bit… the MTN Head Office in Johannesburg has decided to redo the application in ALL the African countries and change their primary colour.
The Senior Manager of Fintech UX/UI asked me to redesign everything according to one screenshot they sent me of the landing screen of the application.
So here are the updated designs (also after a few alterations đŸ˜‰ )
This is a really short version of all the work that has gone into this, the new MTN MoMo application is going live in Zambia on Thursday 11 November 2022.
In July I created some updates to the flows and tested it with our users in Zambia, I’ve also implemented and adjusted the designs and flows according to the feedback we received, but these updates will only be rolled out early next year.
The current designs are very text heavy and we wanted to make the loan application flow easier and more intuitive for the users.
On the updated loan request flow we have added an ‘offers’ screen where we use tabs to also split the offers up into single & multi instalment offers.
I created a video in Figma as an internal ‘promo’ video to show the rest of the company our first ‘app’ (well technically a webpage inside native applications).
